Vietnam jails former top official for eight years after mismanagement in office

HO CHI MINH CITY, Sept 21 (Vietnam News/ANN): Former vice chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Tai was sentenced to eight years in prison on Sunday for violating regulations on management and use of State assets, which resulted in a loss of VNĐ1.927 trillion (US$83 million) to the treasury.

The 68-year-old former official was found guilty of leasing out a public land lot at 8-12 Le Duan Street in HCM City’s District 1 without competitive bidding, causing losses worth millions of dollars to the city.
