HONG KONG, Sept 15 (SCMP): Hong Kong’s embattled leader attempted to “set the record straight” on Tuesday, saying politicians who described the 12 city residents now detained in mainland China as oppressed democracy activists were attempting to divert attention from their status as wanted individuals.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said rather than linking their plight with democracy, the focus should be on the fact that the 12 now held in neighbouring Shenzhen were sought by Hong Kong police for crimes related to the city’s anti-government movement.
