PATTANI, July 3 (Bernama): A volunteer and a militant group member were killed, while two others were seriously injured in a shooting incident in the Panare district, Pattani, southern Thailand today.

Pattani police chief Maj Gen Piyawat Chalermsi said in the incident around 2pm (local time), authorities had surrounded a house in Kg Rawo which was believed to be a hiding place for militant group members.

"Upon entering the village, the security force team was shot by a group of armed men.

"In the exchange of fire, a militant group member and a volunteer were killed while two other volunteer rangers were seriously injured,” he said.

Chalermsi however said the armed men managed to flee and the authorities are intensifying efforts to track them down.

He said preliminary investigations found that the dead militant group member had two arrest warrants issued in 2010 and 2011. - Bernama
