The 19th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Students’ Overseas Preliminary Round in Laos was recently held at the Conficius Institute of the National University of Laos (NUOL) in the capital Vientiane.
The contest, themed “We are the World”, drew the participation of nine Lao students from NUOL, Souphanouvong University and Suzhou University of Laos and others.
Attending the four sections of speech, knowledge quiz, real-time Q&A and talent show, the contestants showed their Chinese language skill and understanding of the Chinese culture.
Chanping Thammanoxay from NUOL’s Chinese language department won the championship, and is to represent Lao college students to compete in the 19th “Chinese Bridge” final contest held in China.
The NUOL started Chinese language teaching in 2003.
In 2006, the NUOL Chinese language department selected its first representative to go to China to compete in the “Chinese Bridge” college student Chinese language competition.
When addressing the contest on Friday, Thongmala Phosikham, deputy dean of NUOL Faculty of Letters, said the influence of the “Chinese Bridge” in Laos continued to increase.
The Lao side would continue to encourage students to learn Chinese language, participate in competitions to win good ranking, and carry out the promotion of Chinese language and culture, said Thongmala.
According to a press release from Chinese embassy on Sunday, the Chinese Ambassador to Laos Jiang Zaidong sent a video message to the competition, expressing his hope that through the “Chinese Bridge”, the Lao students would be encouraged to learn Chinese well and take it as an advantage to better serve the country and people.
He added that the embassy would provide more talent support for friendly exchanges and cooperation between China and Laos. — Xinhua
