Jokowi visits markets in Jambi province

JAKARTA: President Joko Widodo (pic, centre), who is currently on a working visit to Jambi Province in Sumatra Island, continued with his routine of visiting markets on Thursday (April 4) to inspect facilities and to check on the availability of essential goods.

Accompanied by Public Works Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, Widodo, better known as Jokowi, emphasised the importance of upgrading market facilities for the traders’ well-being. He also stressed on the need to monitor prices of essential goods.

According to a statement by the President's Secretariat, Jokowi voiced his concerns about the inadequate lighting which had discouraged traders from operating inside.

He then instructed Basuki to upgrade the lighting and the parking facilities to benefit the traders, the local economy and to enhance the comfort of the community.

One of the markets that Jokowi visited was the Muara Bungo Market in Bungo district.

Jokowi was pleased with the stable supply and the readily available essential items, particularly rice.

Their prices were also similar to those at the Tanjung Bungur Market in Tebo district and the Merangin Market in Merangin district, both visited by him on Wednesday.

The prices of items like shallots and garlic are consistent with those in other provinces, Jokowi said, praising their stability ahead of the upcoming Aidilfitri celebration.

During the visit, he interacted with the traders and the public, taking selfies with them. - Bernama
