China-EU ties: all eyes on Macron as Merkel prepares to hand over policy reins


HONG KONG, Jan 4 (SCMP): With Germany’s long-time leader Angela Merkel due to step down this year, China will turn its attention to Emmanuel Macron in 2021 as he takes over as the European Union’s interlocutor-in-chief.

The latest sign of France’s growing importance in EU-China relations came this week, when Chinese President Xi Jinping sealed a landmark investment pact with the bloc, witnessed by both Merkel and Macron, the French president.
