Under pressure: Fobo monitors your tyres wirelessly

No more flats: The Fobo Tire app can receive air pressure information from all four tyres and alert the user when there is a problem.

A new Bluetooth gadget attaches to car tyre valves and sends a warning to the smartphone when they are running low on air.

Homegrown company Salutica Allied Solutions Sdn Bhd has launched the Fobo Tire, a wireless tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

Unlike most wireless TPMS products which operate on the 433MHz frequency, the Fobo Tire works over Bluetooth (which works on the 2.4GHz frequency) and syncs to an app on Android or iOS smartphone.

Each Fobo Tire unit is easily installed onto the tyre valve and once attached it continuously delivers real-time tyre pressure information to the smartphone app and will alert the user should it reach a critical level.

The unit itself is IP57 certified for water- and impact-resistance so that it can handle the abuse that the tyre will be subjected to when the car travels at high speeds. It’s capable of handling stones and other objects hitting it at up to 350 Newtons.

According to George Pan, Salutica's director of business development and R&D, each Fobo Tire unit only weighs 10g and has been extensively tested to ensure that the unit will have little to no effect on the balance of the tyres even at speeds of up to 240kph.

To prevent theft, the FoboTire needs to be activated and unlocked via a Cloud account and comes with special locking nuts and wrench.

For owners of multiple cars, the Fobo Tire app can pair and sync with up to 20 cars at a time and each can be monitored separately using the app.

The package comes with four units (one for each tyre) and an in-car system which helps to continuously monitor tyre pressure and alert users even when they are not using the smartphone app.

Fobo Tire was originally crowdfunded via Indiegogo — it exceeded its initial goal of US$28,000 (RM91,000) and collected a total of US$186,000 (RM608,000).

It will be shipping to Indiegogo investors soon while others have to wait till later this month or early December when it is expected to go on sale for RM599. It will be available at selected Apple speciality stores and car accessory shops.
