KUALA LUMPUR: National junior Shasangari Sivaneswary hit her stride beautifully to clinch two gold medals on the opening day of the Gymnastics Carnival Intercity Rhythmic Gymnastics Competition at Gym 1 in Bukit Jalil.
The 14-year-old was the runway winner in the hoop on Saturday, coolly scoring 13.966 points to finish ahead of compatriot Izzah Amzan (11.500). Japan’s Akari Dozono (13.033) took the bronze.
In the ball event, Shasangari was also peerless with a 13.783 total. Dozono was placed second after collecting 13.000 points while Malaysian Shak Yuki was third with a 12.883 total.

In the seniors category, it was an all-Malaysian affair as Amy Kwan Dict Weng took gold in the hoop with a score of 13.700 ahead of team-mates Wong Poh San (13.200) and Fatin Zakirah Jalany Zain Jalany (11.950).
Amy was denied a second gold after Fatin pipped her to the top spot in the ball event with a score of 13.916. Amy ended up with the silver (13.883) with Poh San (13.016) completing the podium.
In the pre-juniors category, it was a head-to-head battle between Japan’s Yuzuki Miyaoka and Malaysia’s Nur Naieme Zainul Ariffin for the individual all-around title. Both ended the day with two golds and a bronze each.
Naieme took the gold in the freehand (11.983) and hoop (11.666) and a bronze in the rope (10.300) while Miyaoka came up tops in both the clubs (11.883) and rope (11.950) with a bronze-medal finish in the freehand (11.183).Miyaoka, however, grabbed the all-around title as her combined total of 45.716 was better than Naieme’s 44.432.
