KUALA LUMPUR: Politicians on both sides of the divide are looking forward to the Arul Kanda Kandasamy-Tony Pua debate.
Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid expects it to be good because “Arul is the head of 1MDB, which Pua (the Petaling Jaya Utara MP) has been criticising”.
“Pua has taken a very negative angle in how he views 1MDB,” he said, adding that the public would get to evaluate both parties during the debate.
Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Johari Abdul Ghani said Pua should not be the only one asking the questions.
“If you want it to be lively, you need to get a moderator,” he said.
Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan was against the event, saying both men had bigger duties than debating each other.
“But since Pua is the chief critic and Arul is the head of 1MDB, this setting allows the public to discern the truth.
Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan took a swipe at Pua on Twitter.
“I heard someone important got a real taste of roasting in Petaling Jaya Utara,” he wrote, likely referring to the Deputy Home Minister’s statement on the debate.
Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad said it would be a good opportunity for Pua to get answers and help the nation learn about the issues involving 1MDB.
Batu MP Tian Chua said it was better to have the debate.
“The way Arul answers questions, he does not really answer. I hope Pua will be able to get answers from him,” he said.
