KUALA LUMPUR: If any foreign vessel encroaches into Malaysian waters, a diplomatic protest note will be issued against the country of its origin.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said this in reference to a foreign patrol vessel spotted close to Luconia Shoals, also known as Gugusan Beting Patinggi Ali, off Miri, last Wednesday.
“A foreign vessel is allowed to have innocent or friendly passage in an area after informing the authorities.
“We are still trying to find out if the vessel was anchored or merely passing through the area,” he said.
Shahidan said the matter would be discussed by the Cabinet as it involved the issue of sovereignty.
Shahidan, who oversees the Maritime Enforcement Agency, was on an official visit to the area, about 85km from the coast of Miri, that day when he saw the vessel with the words “China Coast Guard”.
He took photographs of it and posted it on his Facebook page.
The photographs showed a bird’s eye view of the shoal and the vessel which seemed to be anchored near the shoal.
The navy and maritime agency are monitoring the patrol vessel.
