KOTA KINABALU: A shopping mall’s move to stage its own Harvest Queen pageant is making some prominent Kadazandusun leaders see red.

They have taken exception to the event being called Unduk Ngadau (beauty contest) as such an event should be organised by those of from Kadazandusun and Murut while the contestants should strictly be from these two ethnic communities.

“The contestants for the Unduk Ngadau should be able to converse in Kadazandusun,” said Joanna Kitingan, the chairperson of the state level Kaamatan or Harvest Festival Unduk Ngadau organising committee on Wednesday.

Joanna, the Sabah Museum director, said the Unduk Ngadau contestants should also embody the spirit of Huminodun.

In Kadazandusun legends, Huminodun was the daughter of the creator Kinoingan and was sacrificed so that humans could have food amid a famine.

Joanna, said it was improper for the Unduk Ngadau title to be used for promoting a commercial establishment.

“By doing so they are making the Unduk Ngadau title cheap. They can use Ms Kaamatan or Miss Harvest Festival instead,” she added.

The state level Unduk Ngadau will be held on May 31 and would be the highlight of the two-day Kaamatan festivities at the Hongkod Koisaan in Penampang near here.
