PAS polls: Three-way fight for No. 1 post possible

KUALA LUMPUR: As PAS’ internal polls loom, its election committee has confirmed that three party top guns are qualified to contest the presidency post, possibly creating a history in the party should there be a contest.

PAS election committee chairman Asmuni Awi said incumbent president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, veteran PAS leader Ahmad Awang and vice-president Datuk Husam Musa were all qualified to contest for the No. 1 post since deadline for nominations closed on April 30.

Refusing to disclose the total nominations tally for the top post as it was a “closely guarded secret", Asmuni said, however, this was subject to the nominees approval on whether to participate in the polls.

“An official letter together with a form will be sent via Pos Laju today (Tuesday) to inform them of their candidacy, and they have until May 19 to respond,” he said, adding that the same method would be applied to qualified nominees at all levels.

On the deputy presidency post, should there be a contest, incumbent Mohamad Sabu would face three possible contenders - Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (now PAS vice-president), Kelantan Deputy Mentri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah and Husam.

Asmuni said a total of 12 PAS leaders are qualified to contest three slots of vice-presidency.

They are incumbents Tuan Ibrahim, Husam, Salahuddin Ayub, information chief Datuk Mahfuz Omar, Mohd Amar, Idris Ahmad, Nasruddin Hassan, Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa, Datuk Iskandar Abdul Samad, Mohamad Noor Mohamad and Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad as well as Mohamad Sabu.

For the Youth chief post, incumbent Suhaizan Kaiat, Raja Ahmad Iskandar Raja Yaacob, Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Aziz, Ahmad Fadli Shaari and Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi are qualified to contest.

This is followed by the deputy Youth chief post where incumbent Muhammad Khalil would face three possible contenders - Khairil Nizam Khirudin, Raja Ahmad Iskandar Raja Yaacob and Kamaruzaman Mohamad.

As for the Muslimat wing (Women) chief, incumbent Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff and Nuridah Salleh are qualified to contest the post.

Seven Muslimat leaders are qualified to contest the deputy Muslimat chief post including the incumbent Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud.

Others are Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad, Mumtaz Md Nawi, Dr Rosni Adam, Nuridah, Siti Zailah and Wan Hasrina Wan Hassan.

Asmuni reminded the nominees to respond via official methods only, which are by post or by hand.

“We will not entertain any response in form of WhatsApp, e-mail or photocopy. This kind of reply would be rejected by us outright,” he said.

The PAS election committee would make an official announcement on the candidates on May 20.

The Islamist party, which holds its polls biennially, is scheduled to have its election during the 62nd Muktamar in Kuala Selangor from June 4 to 6.
