GEORGE TOWN: It will cost between RM250mil and RM300mil to build the 3km cable car system linking Penang island and the mainland, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said.
He said the figure was a rough estimate of the cost for the Penang Sky Cab project, which he hoped would be implemented by year-end or next year for completion in 2018.
Speaking to reporters yesterday, Lim said the cable car trip would take about 15 minutes each way at a speed of 4m per second.
It was reported yesterday that the cable car would link Penang Sentral in Butterworth to Gat Lebuh Noordin on the island.
Penang Sentral property and retail division senior vice-president Shireen Mohd Iqbal had said that the cable car system would be 90m above sea level with 50m between pylons, and eight or nine towers spaced about 500m apart.
Lim had said on Wednesday that the cable car station on the mainland would be located next to the Penang Sentral transportation hub, which includes the Sultan Abdul Halim ferry terminal.
According to the Sky Cab project concept study distributed to journalists yesterday, the cable car system is designed for 2,000 passengers per hour per direction with 80 cabins, but under the first phase, it will cater to 1,000 passengers per hour per direction with 40 cabins.
