GEORGE TOWN: The MCA has again called on Malaysians to reject the hudud penal code that the Kelantan government intends to enforce in the state.

Party president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said it was “high time” Malaysians stand up for moderation and reject the hudud capital punishment.

He said implementing hudud would subvert the legal system in the country.

“It’s a serious move and it will change the political landscape in Malaysia,” he told reporters after attending the 123rd anniversary celebration and induction of the seventh abbot of the Kek Lok Si Temple in Air Itam yesterday.

Liow said it would be the “darkest day” in Malaysia if the amendments were passed.

“It will hurt the people and I call for Malaysians to stand up against it,” he said.

Liow also took the DAP and PKR to task over the matter, saying the two parties must ensure the hudud legislations are not implemented.

He singled out the DAP as having to bear “the most responsibility” as it had allegedly been helping PAS to achieve the hudud goal.

In a related development, Penang Gerakan chairman Teng Chang Yeow said DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and his son, party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, cannot claim ignorance as they had given an assurance to voters that it was alright to support PAS in the last general election despite knowing its agenda.

“DAP is out to hoodwink the Chinese into believing it is capable of controlling PAS,” he said

Ven Xian Guan, 47, took over from Datuk Seri Ven Seck Jit Heng, 59, who had been the Kek Lok Si abbot for 12 years.

Under his leadership, the temple completed the construction of the 30.2m bronze Guan Yin statue.

At 30.2m high and complemented with a 60.9m three-tiered roof pavilion, it is the tallest Guan Yin statue in the world.

Ven Seck Jit Heng also initiated several charity work, including an orphanage and old folks home as well as a medical centre which is underway.
