PETALING JAYA: A massive traffic jam was caused on Sunday morning due to 12 concrete segments falling off a trailer at Jalan Cheras near the Billion Roundabout flyover.

According to police sources, the incident happened at 11.30am at Batu 5 ½, Jalan Cheras.

The 12 girders fell when a trailer carrying 16 MRT concrete segments for the Pudu underground MRT project toppled after the trailer driver hit the emergency brake due to a sudden stop in traffic.

Out of the 12 segments that fell, 10 were two-ton segments, while the other two were one-ton segments.

Traffic remains backed-up despite works to move the girders ending at 1.15pm.

In a statement, MRT Corp said the company will be investigating the matter and action will be taken on those responsible.

According to Star Radio Traffic tweet, traffic remained congested at 2.02pm even though the 12 fallen segments had been cleared up.

No casualties were reported in the incident.

This follows last Monday’s incident where three Bangladeshi workers on the MRT project, Elahi Hossain,  Alauddin Mollik and Mohamad Faruk Khan were killed when a 300-tonne concrete span dislodged from its piers and fell to the ground below at 8.30pm Monday.

The 38-metre span that killed the three was made up of 14 segmented box girders.
