PETALING JAYA: A Form Five student, arrested for carjacking and abducting two young children in Puchong on Tuesday, was only eyeing the valuables in the vehicle and did not notice the boys inside it, police said.
He is said to have only realised the nine-year-old and three-month-old siblings in the back seat after driving 5km.
He then forced them out onto the roadside by threatening them with a box cutter.
The remand for the 17-year-old, who was arrested in Taman Puchong Perdana on Wednesday, has been extended until Monday.
He could be charged as a juvenile for armed robbery and abduction.
“The suspect and his parents are cooperating with the police. He is faring well emotionally in the police lock-up.
“He said he had no intention of abducting the two boys and didn’t even notice them when he broke into the car. He was only interested in the cash and valuables inside the car,” said Subang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Yahaya Ramli.
He said police found no links to gangs or personal problems that could have been a factor behind the crime.
“Maybe he was influenced to do it by his peers,” ACP Yahaya said.
On Tuesday, a religious school teacher was dropping off her four children at their babysitter’s house in Jalan Dahlia at about 7.10am when the suspect, in school uniform, drove off the car with the two children.
They were found by the roadside in Puchong Industrial Park an hour later. The vehicle was recovered at 8pm the same day in Taman Puchong Perdana.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested the suspect at a house in Puchong Perdana at 2.15am on Wednesday.
ACP Yahaya said the suspect had been watching the woman’s daily routine of dropping off her children at the babysitter’s and saw an opportunity to commit a crime.
“I advise the public not to be too complacent and be aware of their surroundings. They go about their daily routine unaware that criminals might be watching them,” he said.
