KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has questioned PAS’ sincerity in wanting to implement the hudud law in Kelantan.
Its vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it was questionable whether PAS’ plan to implement the law was for the sake of Islam or merely to gain political support from the Malays.
Ahmad Zahid who is also Home Minister said this following a statement by DAP vice-chairman Teresa Kok, who claimed that PAS wanted to implement the hudud law to shore up its waning support from the Malays.
Teresa was reported to have made the statement after meeting Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohamad Amar Nik Abdullah last Tuesday.
“If what is said by Kok is true that it (the hudud implementation) is to trap Umno and merely to achieve PAS’ political objective, then the move to implement hudud law and the intention to get support from Umno, are political ploys that have to re-evaluated by all Muslims in Malaysia.
“Is PAS worried that without hudud, its influence among the Malays-Muslims would wane?,” he told a press conference here.
He said Kok’s statement as reported by a news portal clearly mentioned PAS’ difficulty in attracting rural Malay support as Umno has alleged that PAS was being controlled by DAP.
“The statement hints that PAS has taken on the challenge by Umno (regarding hudud) for its own political survival,” he said.
Dr Ahmad Zahid also questioned if Kok’s statement echoed the real principle of DAP and PKR.
“Does PKR agree with Kok’s statement especially since DAP is known to be anti-hudud and cannot be trusted by Muslims,” he said.
Dr Ahmad Zahid also pointed out that DAP and PKR had clearly rejected PAS’ hudud although there are Muslims in the parties.
“It is true that PAS does not have any support from its own coalition members,” he said, adding that Umno has never rejected hudud.
Ahmad Zahid said Umno would study the statements made by PAS leaders on the party’s intention to implement hudud.
