BUKIT MERTAJAM: The man, who allegedly set his wife on fire that resulted in her death last year, has been charged in a Sessions Court here.
Chiam Nguang Huat, 40, from Taman Bayu Mutiara here, is accused of murdering his wife Lai Siew Fong, 36, at their home in Taman Bayu Mutiara here at around 4pm on June 24, last year.
No plea was recorded from the unemployed father of two, who faces the mandatory death sentence under Section 302 of the Penal Code, if convicted.
No bail was granted as the offence under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder is a non-bailable offence.
Sessions judge Musyiri Peet fixed April 10 for mention pending the chemist report.
Lawyer Ho Leng Hong held a watching brief on behalf of the victim’s family while the accused was unrepresented. Deputy public prosecutor Lim Saw Sim prosecuted.
It was reported that a neighbour alerted the police after spotting Lai engulfed in flames at her house in Taman Bayu Mutiara in Bukit Mertajam.
The woman, who had been fighting for her life at the hospital for almost 40 days, died after suffering 70% burns on her body.
Several family members of both the accused and the victim were present in court yesterday.
