KUALA LUMPUR: Imagine seeing arch-rivals former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad of Umno and Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat of PAS - in one image.

It's unusual on normal days and almost never during election season when Umno and PAS are vying for the people's votes.

The image of the two leaders are, however, seen together on a 10m-long graffiti mural along the Klang river, welcoming people who enter the city. It has the words “Malaya Heroes” on it.

Dr Mahathir's side of the mural is coated in blue and swathes of red, while Nik Aziz's face is surrounded by streaks of green.

It can be seen from the Pasar Seni LRT station and has commuters doing a double take at the sight of the unusual image.

The mural was painted last October by a street art group called Abstrax Jingga.

Graphic artist Mohd Fahmi Fadhi, 31, said he and another street artist, who only wanted to be identified as Medea (pic), came up with the idea in appreciation of the two leaders.

“Dr Mahathir helped to build Malaysia's economy, while Nik Aziz has inspired people to fight for Islam.

“So, we wanted to honour them both,” he said.

Mohd Fahmi said he created several draft artwork, mostly inspired by US President Barack Obama's “Hope” graphics during the 2008 US presidential elections.

The final draft was then handed to Medea to paint.

Medea coated the wall with more than seven litres of light blue paint before using over 60 spray-paint cans to etch out Mohd Fahmi's work.

It was a feat that took him and fellow graffiti artist, known only as Yumz, a week to finish.

“It was difficult because there were some days when it rained heavily and at other times, the river was flooded,” he said.

Medea said the team spent about RM400 to come up with the mural.

“City Hall was supportive and graffiti artists were given the wall space near the Central Market to paint on,” he added.

Medea said the team planned to paint murals of other national icons, such as Tan Sri P. Ramlee, in the future.
