KUALA Lumpur will have about 10km of cycling lanes by middle of next year once three cycling lane projects in the city are completed.
Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib said the move to create cycling lanes was to ensure bicycles became an alternative mode of transport in the city.
“In order to achieve this, we need to build the infrastructure and facilities to support it,” he added.
Tenders to construct cycling lanes for two areas in Kuala lumpur are currently being considered by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and one of it is expected to be awarded as early as next month.
The first, which is expected to be completed by end of this year, is located in Batu and centres around SK Batu Muda.
A portion of this route utilised the space under the high-tension cables between the DUKE Highway and Sungai Batu where it joined up with the main road that bordered the river up until PPR Batu.
A current road project by the Department of Civil & Drainage Engineering to link the main road and Taman Metropolitan Batu across the river would also have a cycling lane.
The other tender is for the Wangsa Maju-Taman Melati project with cycling lanes connecting two LRT stations there.
“There is a problem connecting the two stations along a portion of Persiaran Pertahanan as it is very narrow but City Hall’s Urban Transportation Department is working on getting it linked,” said Ahmad Phesal.
He said those two projects were aimed at getting the community to use bicycles as a new mode of transport to get around their area.
“In Batu, we anticipate schoolchildren to use the lanes while in Wangsa Maju-Taman Melati we hope the lanes will be used by the working crowd and shoppers,” he said, adding that experts on the matter would be invited to give their feedback on the projects.
He said additional facilities would be installed to encourage the use of bicycles, including parking racks, lighting and CCTV at LRT stations.
On the Dataran Merdeka-Mid Valley bicycle route along the banks of Sungai Klang, Ahmad Phesal said it was about 80% completed.
“One can cycle along most of the route except for a small portion where Prasarana is located.
“They are concerned about security and safety, so we are now discussing with them and hope for a win-win situation,” he told reporters after a media cycling tour of the route.
During the tour, suggestions on building a few rain shelters as well as installing lights, CCTV and safety rails along the route were brought up.
“We expect this route to be completed by next year,” he said, adding that they would also consider increasing the number of cycling enforcement officers.
