HAS a World Cup theme song ever got stuck in your head like an earworm?

According to this week’s The Star Online poll, Waka Waka (This time for Africa) by Colombian singer Shakira, which was the official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, has been voted the best World Cup song.

Although the official 2014 FIFA World Cup song is We Are One (Ole Ola) by American rapper Pitbull, American entertainer Jennifer Lopez and Brazilian singer Claudia Leitte, it has received numerous negative responses for having “lack of Brazilian or football feeling”.

Out of 406 respondents, 172 (42%) chose Waka Waka as their favourite World Cup song while 158 respondents (39%) chose La Copa De La Vida (The Cup of Life) by Ricky Martin.

Ricky Martin’s ‘La Copa De La Vida’ (The Cup of Life) garnered 39% of the votes.

This was the 1998 FIFA World Cup official song.

Only 25 respondents chose We Are One (Ole Ola).

The other choices were Shakira’s La La La (Brazil 2014) and Vida also by Ricky Martin.

According to The Miami Herald/McClatchy-Tribune Information Services, the Waka Waka video racked up almost 700 million views on YouTube.

The song is also one her best-selling digital songs with over 1.7 million digital sales.

La Copa De La Vida (The Cup of Life) remained on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 34 weeks and is one of Martin’s most successful songs.
