NO seat was left empty as Malaysian fashion aficionados flocked to the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week (KLFW) Ready-To-Wear Collections 2015 to see what is “in” this season.
More than 80 Malaysian designers showcased their pret-a-porter collections over five days at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.
For the second year running, the event was sponsored by Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN).
The fourth night’s line-up was speckled with diverse silhouettes from five local designers.
It began with the sleeker combination of structured fluidity that emphasises the duality of feminine grace and strength with Syaiful Baharim’s line using vibrant solid colours of oranges, reds and blues.
While three designers for Royal Songket Terengganu masterfully moulded versatility into an artistically modern take on the traditional songket material.
These included Mohd Hamidi Ahmad Jamili’s placing songket material in front and at the centre by patching it with current wearable silhouettes such as blazers and shirt dresses for women.
Mohd Yazid Mohd Jamil and Nadia Hasmin Hassan took different, subtler approaches by combining songket with white crop tops, cutout dresses and skirts with designs contoured to the female form.
Mohd Yazid used more pastel tones of songket, whereas Nadia’s songket material peeped out from beneath mesh overlays, creating a softer look and finish to her designs.
Designer Hatta Dolmat teamed up with Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Foundation to give back in his own fashion forward way by bringing awareness to their cause.
His designs revolved around the oversized trend with layers and coats drawing inspiration from varsity and aviator structured jackets as well as trench coats in pastel colours.
“I have been in the industry for two years now and it’s the first time I have joined KLFW and what I can bring to the foundation is creating awareness.
“The colours in this collection such as lavender are colours in support of cancer awareness, as well as the cancer foundation’s official logo colours.
“A percentage from the earnings from the sale of the collections will go towards the cancer foundation.
“The KLFW is a good sign that our fashion industry is healthy and with BSN giving 100% support in boosting and developing the fashion industry,” he said.
Among those who attended the event was BSN Corporate Support deputy chief executive Siew Kin Meng.
“Our local designers have just shown the world that we are actually on par with international designers.
“We feel that young designers actually deserve a break; what is an idea, a creation, without turning it into a fashion brand that we can showcase to the world?
“We want to let them (designers) know their ideas can be turned into a business and that they can make a living out of their creations, which they should be proud of,” Siew said, encouraging the purchase of Malaysian fashion.
