Celebrating William Shakespeare's 450th birthday with a bang

Lots of events and special tours are being organised in celebration of the Bard's birthday on April 23.

Lovers of the world’s most famous playwright take note: This year marks the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth, a milestone that will be feted with candlelit plays and luxury tours across Britain.

To kickstart the year, the newly opened Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London is staging plays performed by candlelight. For the full effect, get a standing ticket (£10/RM54) and experience the play as spectators did in the 16th century.

Starting off the 2014 season is The Duchess Of Malfi by John Webster, one of Shakespeare’s contemporaries.

On April 23, the day of Shakespeare’s birth, The Globe Theatre will stage its premiere performance of Hamlet, the first of a two-year world tour. And on April 26-27, the playwright’s hometown Stratford-upon-Avon will throw a weekend festival that will include performances by the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Meanwhile, serious fans can also take part in a five-night tour that will take guests through the same picturesque English towns and villages the playwright would have made on his journey between the Globe Theatre in London and his Warwickshire home.

The tour will be led by Shakespearean actor James Howard and include stops at Blenheim Palace, a stately country home that served as the setting for key scenes in Kenneth Branagh’s cinematic version of Hamlet, as well as at Hall’s Croft, home of Shakespeare’s daughter Susanna.

Capping the trip is a bubbly-lubricated tour of Shakespeare’s childhood home. The “Discover Shakespeare’s Way” tour is priced at £1,575 (RM8,555) and includes four- to five-star accommodations, some meals, transportation in a luxury coach and guided tours.
