It's arguable that one of the most major advances in photography since digital began is the idea of stacking a bunch of images together to get around limitations of the camera or the lens.
For example, if your camera is not capable of capturing a very high contrast scene with a very big difference between the brightest and the darkest areas, you can shoot a number of photos of the same scene at different exposures and then merge those photos together to achieve a High Dynamic Range (HDR) image.
