If you want to make sure you have the latest and greatest software on your smartphone at all times, then Apple and Google phones are the way to go.

According to research done by German consumer organisation Stiftung Warentest, iPhones and Google Pixels get the most updates and are more reliably provided with new software over the course of several years.

This means you won't have to keep on buying a new phone every year or two to keep up to date on the latest software designs and features.

However, other Android providers also did well overall: Huawei's Honor, OnePlus and LG also had pretty regular updates for their smartphones.

Some mid-range Androids phones also deserve a mention as well. Android One, for instance, works closely with Google and can therefore guarantee updated operating systems for two years and regular security updates for three years. Some devices from Nokia, Motorola and HTC are Android One phones.

The researchers found that Android One phones are able to deliver on that promise, although it takes a couple of weeks longer than on Google's high-end Pixel phones. But, rain or shine, the updates do arrive. – dpa
