An empty mobile battery and no electrical outlet in sight: a nightmare in today's world. But in the Norwegian town of Halden, there is no need to stress.

Located south of Norway's capital Oslo, the town has installed two "smart" park benches where mobile phones and other electronic devices can be charged.

Not only can you charge your phone, but the benches also offer free WiFi and measure the surrounding air's humidity, temperature and CO2 content.

Town official Martin Vik says the "benches are 100% self-sufficient", thanks to solar cells installed over the seats.

The high-tech public seating project is aimed at raising awareness of sustainable development, renewable energy production and climate data. They were financed by the Tekna society of technical and scientific professionals and a local bank. – dpa
