The season of new iPhones is upon us. And this September, Apple's traditional month for smartphone announcements, looks set to bring another range of iPhones following press invitations for an event on Sept 12.
Although the company made no mention of what to expect at the event, reports say Apple is planning a new series of iPhones in three different sizes, all of them with the edge-to-edge screen design of the iPhone X released last year.
Tech circles have speculated as to whether Apple will announce an entirely new generation of phone or continue in its tradition of giving the previous generation the "S" upgrade, which would make the latest model the iPhone X S.
Business wire Bloomberg has quoted informed sources as saying that Apple plans to release three phones with different screen sizes for the Christmas season. The cheapest model will have a 6.1 inch (15.5cm) display and is designed to replace the iPhone 8.
In contrast to the OLED display of the US$1,000 (RM4,147) iPhone X, this model will have an LCD screen and the frame will be made out of aluminium rather than stainless steel.
There will also be a more expensive model with a 6.5 inch (16.5cm) OLED display as well as a processing power and camera upgrade for the current 5.8-inch OLED display iPhone X. The facial recognition feature introduced with the iPhone X will replace the fingerprint sensor in all three new models.
Apple also plans updates for its Watch, its iPad Pro tablets and the wireless AirPods earphones, Bloomberg reported. Tech blog 9to5Mac has reported Apple's new smartwatch is also to be unveiled with a larger screen thanks to smaller bezels. – dpa
