In an age where action cameras have caught on in a big way with both thrill seekers and casual users alike, it was probably a no-brainer for Nikon to join the bandwagon.

The company’s new Coolpix W300 is touted as a super rugged camera that’s waterproof, shock- and dust-proof, cold-resistant, and on top of that is capable of shooting 4K UHD videos.

“The camera is ready to tough it out to preserve your moments in both quality stills and 4K UHD videos,” said Nikon Singapore Pte Ltd international business division imaging group general manager Hiroki Yamaoka.

The W300’s tough body is claimed to be able to withstand water at a depth of up to 30m, temperatures as low as -10°C and falls from up to 2.4m – which means you can tote it along for worry-free use while scuba diving, on the ski slopes and on uphill hikes.

It has a 5x optical zoom Nikkor lens covering wide-angle 24mm to telephoto 120mm with a maximum aperture of f/2.8, an effective pixel count of approximately 16-megapixels, and vibration reduction to reduce blur from camera shake or subject movement.

It can also record not just time-lapse videos but also superlapse movies.

Divers in particular will also be pleased to know that when going underwater and facing different lighting environments, the W300’s exposure can be locked with the AE lock function.

Additionally, the camera also records information such as location data and altitude/water depth – all of which can be displayed at a touch of a button – and is easy to use even while wearing gloves.

There’s also support for Snap-Bridge to easily upload your images to social media networks.

The W300 will be available end of this month but the local pricing has yet to be announced.
