Broken smartphone: How much can you fix yourself?

Does a broken smartphone always have to be sent off for a costly repair? Or does a bit of home DIY do the trick? 

Smartphones contain a lot of tiny tech crammed into small spaces, meaning that even a minor fall can do a lot of damage. Then it has to be sent off for what could be a costly repair.
