The humble history of drones or UAVS (unmanned aerial vehicles) actually goes all the way back to 1849 when Austrians sent 200 unmanned balloons with bombs to Venice, Italy, as bombing with artillery was impossible.
These balloons were impossible to navigate and were at the mercy of the wind. They did come with a primitive form of tech – long copper wires were used by operators to remotely trigger bombs via electro magnetism.
