Digital Darwinism: Staying light footed in the age of digital disruption

Lau: Don't be afraid of change.

“You cannot rest on your laurels within the technology space,” says SY Lau, senior executive vice president of Tencent Holdings and president of its online media group. “Companies that embrace change in a positive way will be able to capture the new opportunities that come with it.”

This ability and willingness to adapt to change is what he calls “digital Darwinism”.

Although it is not possible for any particular person to control the way in which technology develops, Lau says one way to deal with the ongoing tech evolution is to “build a platform which is big and open enough so that technological changes can emerge organically”.

This approach is part of Tencent’s open platform strategy, which he says aims at “capitalising on the wisdom of social ideation.”

In addition to this, Lau shares that Tencent also adopts a micro innovation strategy.

“We have found that it is much better to make small and swift innovations instead of allocating large amounts of time and resources to big and long term projects which may not bring about the desired impact,” he says.

The company also places significant importance on fostering in-depth cooperation with its partners. In Lau’s terms, this means identifying those who are the best at what they are doing.

It is with such corporate perspectives in place that Tencent is navigating through this present season of digital disruption.
