BALING: Kulim-Bandar Baharu MP Datuk Zulkifli Noordin has apologised to Hindus for the hurt he caused them in a speech made during his time with PAS, admitting it was a mistake and that he was remorseful.
Zulkifli questioned Opposition parties as to why they were using his past speeches as a weapon to damage his reputation.
“I was a lawyer for Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in his first sodomy trial and was naive back then,” he told Bernama here yesterday.
Zulkifli is now Perkasa vice-chairman.
Yesterday, Zulkifli continued to draw flak from politicians from both sides of the divide.
“His statements were seditious and contravened the freedom of religion enshrined in the Consti-tution,” said S. Neelamekan, who is Lunas DAP branch chair- man.
He said Zulkifli should remember that one of the Islamic values was to safeguard the minorities’ interest and not condemn, insult and ridicule.
In KUANTAN, Pahang MIC Youth Chief K. Sivakumar said the remarks mocking Hindu deities could not be denied by the independent MP as it was captured and circulated widely on YouTube.
Sivakumar said police reports had been lodged and that investigations should start immediately.
In the video clip, Zulkifli said he had talked to a street peddler and purportedly asked why Hindu gods did not prevent the man’s shop from being flooded.
Pahang PAS commissioner Da-tuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said insulting the religious beliefs of others was against the teachings of Islam.
