PETALING JAYA: Promising talent Mohd Farez Izwan is gearing up for another rough encounter when the Asian Junior Championships begin in Amman, Jordan, today.
The 14-year-old Farez, who hails from Sabah but currently trains at the Bukit Jalil Sports School, is the top seed and heavy favourite for the Under-15 title. He was the winner of the Under-13 title in Amman two years ago.
Then, the lanky Farez defeated home favourite Mohammad Alsarraj but it was not a pleasant affair as his opponent was very physical in his approach.
And Farez, affectionately known as Bobo, is preparing himself for another rough encounter against Alsarraj, whom he is tipped to meet in the final.
“It will be tough because Alsarraj always has a little trick up his sleeve, especially when he’s at a disadvantage,” said Farez.
“I have yet to play him since then. But I believe that our standards are not too far apart.
“If I meet him again, most probably in the final, I will just stick to the basics and keep things tight in order not to let him dictate play.
“For now, I’m happy that I have made a strong recovery from the wrist injury I suffered late last year. I’m beginning to play well again.
“Winning the double – the Milo All Star and Penang Junior Open – earlier this month has also boosted my confidence. I’m confident of going all the way to the final and winning another title in Amman.”
Farez should face minimum resistance in the early rounds and should easily make the semi-finals where he’ll probably take on joint third-fourth seed Robin Mann of India.
Besides Farez, the other Malaysian competing in the Under-15 category is Kedah’s Ong Sai Hung.
The other Malaysian competing in the boys’ category are Ng Eain Yow, Mohd Syafiq Kamal, Darren Chan (Under-17), Mohd Hafiz Zhafri and Siow Yee Xian (Under-13).
The girls’ team consist of Rachel Arnold, Vanessa Raj (Under-19), Nazihah Hanis (Under-17), S. Sivasangari, Andrea Lee, Zoe Foo (Under-15), Aifa Azman and Ooi Kah Yan (Under-13).
