PETALING JAYA: It was pure joy for Joseline Cheah as she clinched a silver medal in the 10m air pistol at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Munich, Germany, yesterday.
The 30-year-old, the first Malaysian to feature in a final at this year’s championships, narrowly missed out on the gold after shooting a nine-series total of 197.8 points in her pet event.
The gold was won by Viktoria Chaika of Belarus who amassed 199.6 points. Germany’s Munkhbayar Dorjsuren brought some cheer to the home crowd as she finished third with 175.1 points.
The silver was Joseline’s first-ever medal in the World Cup.
And that was not the only cause to celebrate as the Penangite had also broken her own seven-year national record during qualifying.
She consistently shot 97 points in all four series for a combined total and a new personal best of 388 to qualify third for the final. Her previous best was 386 which she set in 2006
“Everything just fell into place today, starting with the qualifying. I was shooting consistent 97s. I had an inkling it might happen ... (breaking the national record)” said Joseline in a telephone interview from Germany.
“My goal, as always, is to try and break my record. I’ve held that record for seven years now so you can imagine how good it feels to go on and break it.
“And then to go on and win my first World Cup medal ... it was icing on the cake! I’m so happy,” she added.
Team-mate Bibiana Ng also did well to finish in the top 30, amassing 378 points to finish 24th.
In the men’s 50m rifle three-position, Mohd Hadafi Jaffar failed to qualify for the final.
He shot a four-series total of 379 (kneeling), 388 (prone) and 364 (standing) for a combined total of 1,131 points to finish 68th.
