THE Kepala Batas constituency has been Umno fortress and the party should be able to maintain that status, said Kepala Batas Umno division secretary Datuk Ahmad Darus.
“Our level of confidence in keeping Kepala Batas and the state seats under it — Penaga, Bertam and Pinang Tunggal — is high.
“Our unity remains strong,” he told the press after launching the ‘Jom Masuk Kolej Komuniti’ event at Kolej Komuniti Kepala Batas on Tuesday.
He added that the 15-day campaigning period would be enough for Barisan Nasional newbies to introduce themselves to the rakyat.
“They are not strangers here compared with the Pakatan Rakyat candidates who are all outsiders. They should be the ones having problems,” he claimed.
Ahmad Darus believed the new faces would be able to attract voters.
The Barisan new faces are Reezal Merican Naina Merican who is replacing former prime minister and Kepala Batas incumbent Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Mohd Zain Ahmad (Penaga) and Shariful Azhar Othman (Bertam), while Pinang Tunggal incumbent Datuk Roslan Saidin is defending his seat.
Ahmad also ridiculed the large turnout during a ceramah by PAS president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang in Kuala Muda on Sunday, claiming that the party had brought in supporters from elsewhere.
“They were outsiders who were not from Kepala Batas.
“Some of the vehicle number plates were not from here, too,” he claimed.
