KUCHING: Policemen and guests were moved to tears as they remembered the sacrifices of those who had fallen in battle against Sulu terrorists in Lahad Datu, Sabah.
The rain added to the sombre atmosphere during the screening of a short video presentation at the ‘United Against Crime’ programme yesterday.
Jabah Mingku, widow of slain policeman DSP Michael Padel, wept openly as son Macloie Michael was seen comforting her, wiping her cheeks, which were wet with tears.
Both were there to attend the presentation of donations to the Lahad Datu Heroes Fund, which totalled RM1,101,540, from the state government and various other organisations and agencies.
“I feel very honoured to be here today.
Now my husband’s deeds and sacrifice
will be remembered,” she told The Star when met after the ceremony yesterday.
“Thanks to generous donations from
various parties, I have been getting by just
fine. My needs and my son’s needs are well taken care of.”
Young Macloie, 11, was even awarded a netbook personally by Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who told the boy to be strong and to take care of his mother.
Medals with the title Pingat Kedaulatan Negara were also conferred to security personnel who had served in Lahad Datu during the ceremony.
In his opening speech, Taib said that those who had lost their lives fighting for the country in Lahad Datu had inspired countless others in the force to do their duties and to ensure the safety of fellow Malaysians.
“When we live in peace, we do not see the sacrifices of those in the armed forces but it is important to appreciate their deeds as it is because of them that we are able to enjoy such peace,” he said.
