WAYANG KULIT ART
A major exhibition of the works of the late Nik Zainal Abidin (1933-1993) is ongoing at Interpr8 Art Space at Publika, Kuala Lumpur until June 8. Zainal, a self-taught artist from Kelantan, is often hailed as the “Painter of the Epics”, a reference to the subject matter that defines most of his work — wayang kulit (shadow puppet play). Soka Gakkai Malaysia is organising an exhibition of carvings titled Celestial Artistry at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM every weekend from now to July 7. The “Celestial Artistry” exhibition will showcase 48 pieces of elegant carvings of jade, stone, wood and ivory. It will display artistically and skilfully designed objects resulting from the ingenuity of the masters to create artworks which are harmonious and balanced between human beings and the environment. Head over to Wei Ling Contemporary this weekend for the Flesh: Blacks & Whites by one of Malaysia’s up-and-coming contemporary artists, Sean Lean. This exhibition shall mark Sean Lean’s first solo showing. Portraits of albinistic animals have been a recurring theme within his artworks. The rarity of both these types of creatures and the mythical aura which they possess, are the reasons behind the artist’s desire to implement their physical forms into his paintings.
