George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said the two, aged 24 and 22, were from the ‘Greenlane Racing Gang’. Both have previous criminal records.
“The fight broke out when someone turned off the music at a thaneer panthal (refreshment stall) when a brother of one of the suspects was carrying a kavadi and dancing there,” he said.
ACP Gan said police were tracing the remaining assailants.
“This is a religious celebration and people should not resort to violence.
“We will be keeping a close watch throughout the return journey of the chariot to the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Lebuh Queen early today.”
The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.
