After an attempted robbery in Bandar Puteri 8, its residents organised a dialogue session with the police to identify and rectify weak spots in the community’s security to prevent similar incidents.
Puchong Voluntary Patrol Scheme (SRS) chairman Datuk Samson Maman said Bandar Puteri 8 was a gated-and-guarded community but the crime had created paranoia among the residents.
“Even when we played back the CCTV video, we could not identify the suspect,” he said.
Samson said some guidelines should be put in place to make sure such an incident did not happen again.
“We should teach our guards and residents to quickly respond to the police when they had been threatened,” he said.
He added that it was up to the residents to call the police or guards if they saw something suspicious.
“The guards are also taking extra precaution by following the visitors’ cars until they reach the house they are visiting,” said Samson.
Puchong Jaya OCPD Inspector Hailmi Zil Azam Nordin said the residential area was one of the finest gated-and-guarded communities in Puchong and security was tight.
“However, residents should be careful whenever they open the gate in the morning and late afternoon as these are the times robbers are most likely to strike,” he said.
When the residents asked whether having a gated-and-guarded community was safe, Hailmi said it was 100% safer than non gated-and-guarded community.
“Robbers are more likely to attack at residential areas without guards. However, we cannot put our safety entirely in the hands of guards,” he said.
He added that residents should be more vigilant to avoid such incident happening again in the future.
On safety measures that the residents should take themselves, Hailmi advised them to use pets such as dogs to give warning if there was an intruder about.
“Knowing your neighbour is also important,” he said.
