PETALING JAYA: After Gangnam Style and the Harlem Shake, another infectious tune has taken the world by storm.
The latest South Korean phenomenon, called Kiyomi Song, has seen countless Internet users uploading videos of themselves doing “cute” hand movements while counting from one to six.
These videos of netizens imitating the movements have garnered more than a million views each on YouTube.
Malaysian actresses Nora Danish, Wawa Zainal, Elfira Loy and actor Nazim Othman are among those caught up in the latest craze, having posted their own versions on video-sharing websites.
The series of hand movements are said to have originated from Korean boy band BtoB member Jung Llhoon and the tune Kiyomi Song was released by Korean female artiste Hari.
Kiyomi or Gwiyomi is a Korean slang for the word “cute”.
Wawa Zainal's version of Kiyomi has over 460,000 views in just four days while Nora's video, which was uploaded on Tuesday, already has more than 450,000 views.
Administrative assistant Nurul Amalina Yusuff, 27, made a Kiyomi video together with her husband “just for fun”.
“I found it very cute and decided to make a video with my husband to show our two-year-old daughter.
“But after weeks of seeing the song all over Facebook and its growing, audible omnipresence as a mobile phone ringtone, it has become a little irritating,” she admitted.
Manager Melanie Anthony, 28, said that she found the song “very annoying” ever since she first heard it several weeks ago.
“I would rather listen to Gangnam Style repeatedly for a full 24 hours,” she said.
Engineer Bobbi Lee, 24, agreed.
“I don't understand why this is famous. At least Gangnam Style was funny and had a meaning. What is the point of this song?” he asked.
