Maybank Malaysian Open: Chong Wei and Daren off to a blistering start

KUALA LUMPUR: World No.1 Lee Chong Wei faced minimum resistance in his bid for a record ninth Maybank Malaysian Open title, thrashing former world junior champion Viktor Axelsen 21-8, 21-10 in the first round at the Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old Chong Wei who is bidding to overtake Wong Peng Soon's record of eight titles, will face Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana next.

The Thai ace dropped a game before overcoming Germany's Marc Zwiebler 11-21, 21-8, 21-13.

It was also a good day for French Open champion Liew Daren, who was on top of his game, beating India's Ajay Jayaram 21-15, 21-11. He will face Indonesia's former Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat in the next round.

Four other Malaysians - Chong Wei Feng, Mohd Arif Abdul Latif, Tan Chun Seang and KLRC's Zulfadli Zulkifli, however, were first round casualties.

Chun Seang and Zulfadli were both beaten in three games - by Hong Kong's Hu Yun and England's Rajiv Ouseph respectively, while Wei Feng was crushed 15-21, 8-21 by second seed Kenichi Tago of Japan. Arif lost to Indonesia's Sony Dwi Kuncoro.

In men's doubles, top seeds Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong got off to a flying start by beating Indonesia's Yonathan Suryatama Dasuki-Hendra Gunawan 21-15, 21-15.

Fifth seeds Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong and Goh V Shem-Lim Khim also went through by beating Danish pairs Christian John Skovgaard-Mads Pieler Kolding and Rasmus Bonde-Mads Conrad Petersen respectively.

Professional pair Gan Teik Chai-Ong Soon Hock also went through by beating the Scottish-English combination of Marcus Ellis-Paul Van Rietvelde 15-21, 21-17, 22-20.

The likes of Nelson Heg-Teo Ee Yi, Chooi Kah Ming-Ow Yao Han, Mohd Razif Latif-Vountus Indra Mawan, Low Juan Shen-Tan Yip Jiun and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari however fell by the wayside.

In mixed doubles, top seeds Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying survived a massive scare by Thailand's Sudket Prapakamol-Duangnong Aroonkesorn 21-8, 15-21, 23-21.

Tan Aik Quan-Lai Pei Jing also went through by beating Thailand's Thitipong Lapoe-Peeraya Munkitamorn, but Ong JIan Guo-Lim Yin Loo lost to Mads Pieler Kolding-Kamilla Rytter Juhl of Denmark.

Women's singles shuttler Sonia Cheah also made a massive breakthrough by beating Japan's Sayaka Takahashi 15-21, 21-19, 21-18.

The world No.58 Sonia will next face Chinese qualifier Yao Xue for a place in the quarter-finals.

Elder sister Lydia, and Tee Jing Yi, however, failed to clear their first round hurdle, losing to South Korea's Sung Ji-hyun and China's Deng Xuan respectively.

In women's doubles, all eight pairs of Liu Ying-Lim Yin Loo, Shevon Lai Jemie-Marylen Ng, Cheah Yee See-Chin Kah Mun, Erica Khoo-See To Chia Vern, Amelia Alicia Anscelly-Soong Fie Cho, Goh Yea Ching-Peck Yen Wei, Ho Yen Mei-Yap Rui Chen and Joyce Choong-Yap Cheng Wen all crashed out in the first round.
