PETALING Jaya City would once again see its much awaited PJ Half Marathon that enjoys a huge response and this time, it promises to be bigger as some 10,000 people are expected to sign up for the 25th anniversary run on Sept 30.
PJ people have made it a must to run – as some run for fun, a few to test their fitness while others just want to be part of the event and this time it would be a grander affair that promises to lend a carnival atmosphere to celebrate the silver jubilee.
For this time the theme is “Run, Because You Can”.
PJ deputy mayor Puasa Md Taib said it was a great race that has seen children, teenagers, adults and whole families taking part thus creating a great outdoor fun on a Sunday morning.
“People love this race and this event, the first 21km run in the country, began in 1984 and it has grown in strength. It has become a part of the annual lifestyle of the community and that is lovely,” he said.
Puasa said this time around PJ City Council wants to have a council team of 25 staff running.
PJ City Council, Selangor Amateur Athletics Association and The Star will jointly organise the 25th edition of PJ Half Marathon to be organised at Stadium Kelana Jaya that is scheduled at 5.30am.
Runners who win would get cash prizes.
PJ Half Marathon, is offering a total cash purse of RM36,200 and also support from sponsors.
The presenter of the run is Golden Screen Cinemas Sdn Bhd while the main sponsor is YTL Communications Sdn Bhd.
Co-sponsors for the race are Nestle Products Sdn Bhd, F&N Beverages Marketing Sdn Bhd, Andaman Property Management Sdn Bhd, Delfi Marketing Sdn Bhd and Sports Toto Malaysia Sdn Bhd. New Balance is the apparel sponsor for the half marathon category.
YTL Communications vice-president C.K. Koay said the firm was proud to be part of the race as the company sees a lot of similarities between the run and the firm.
“We want to encourage the community to be active and mobile just like our service,” he said.
Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) general manager Irving Chee said the common factor in this event is GSC and the PJ Half Marathon celebrating its 25th year.
“We want to make this race a great event and GSC wants to encourage the community to participate, as each participant that signs up, RM5 will be donated to selected non-governmental organisations that cater to the disabled and physically handicapped,” he said.
Chee added as presenter of the PJ Half Marathon, GSC promises to inject the fun element by bringing in mascot appearances, movie-related games and there will also be costumed characters participating in the Fun Run.
Nestle Products sports marketing executive coffee and beverages business unit Lim Kerwin said the firm has been with the event since its humble beginnings and would sponsor Milo drinks and cash.
F&N Beverages Marketing region event and sponsorship manager Muhammad Fauzi Ahmad said the beverage firm would be at the five water stations along the race route to give out Ice Mountain mineral water and 100 Plus drinks.
Andaman Property Management sales and marketing manager Patty Lim said the firm was sponsoring RM25,000 cash for the run and it was their second time being part of it.
“We hope to put up a team of 30 to run in this race. It is a meaningful event,” she said.
Delfi Marketing Sdn Bhd pharmaceutical division assistant product manager Charis Loh said the company would sponsor Salonpas patch for all 10,000 runners and provide Salonpas spray for runners warming up before and after the run.
“We would apply the spray for the runners to relieve muscle pains,” she said.
Sports Toto Malaysia communications senior manager Emily Tan said the company is active in community sports and would sponsor cash and in kind.
“We have been with the event for 20 years and want to be part of
it to celebrate the 25th year,” she said.
Categories will include men’s open, men’s veteran, women’s open, women’s veteran and three 7km categories; men’s open, women’s open school boys (13 years to below 18) and girls (13 years to below 18). For those who want to have some fun there is the 3km Fun Run (12-years and above) while those below 12 must be accompanied by a parent.
All categories are open to Malaysian citizens and permanent residents.
Star Publications chief events officer Iris Tan said the event this time would be a bigger and better one for all to remember as it celebrates the silver jubilee.
“We are going to make it into a carnival atmosphere where all can have a great time and it would be awesome with 10,000 people in one place,” she said.
Celebrities will be around as participants and to further enliven the event. Official radio station Red FM, 998, Suria FM and Capital FM will entertain the crowd.
