Sweeping up sweet prizes

Ready, set, go!: Contestants in two groups of five each at the start of the Hypermarket Big Sweep at Tesco Mergong in Alor Setar, Kedah. The competition required participants to find 20 items listed in the 'shopping list' in 20 minutes and bring the items to the cashier. The first to go through the checkout counter is the winner.

IN conjunction with Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd’s #1 For Great Prices Campaign launched last week, the Hypermarket Big Sweep contest kicked off in Tesco Mergong in Alor Setar.

The contest offered up to RM5,000 worth of Tesco vouchers to be won.

Ten contestants rushed along the hypermarket’s aisles to locate 20 items in their ‘shopping list’.

The first three winners who went though the checkout counter with the correct items won Tesco vouchers worth RM1,000, RM800 and RM500 respectively.

Others got the chance to win RM100 worth of vouchers and other consolation prizes.

Tesco Communications manager (Corporate Affairs Department) Rohazida Mohamed said all the items collected in the contest yesterday would be donated to local charity Rumah Sinar Harapan.

The sweep’s participants were divided into two groups — Group A and B— which took turns in the contest.

He said he was familiar with the location of the items as he is working in the same building as Tesco and always shopped in the hypermarket.

Group A’s second-place winner Norazah Mohd Asarani, 42, a housewife, said she brought all her five children to support her during the contest.

“I’m a loyal Tesco customer and that’s why I was able to find all the items on the list quickly,” she added.

Sales assistant Jireh Lian Zhu Zhi, 20, who won the first prize in Group B, said he always shopped for electrical items at Tesco.

“I’m familiar with the layout, which helped me locate the items faster,” he said.

Tesco’s #1 For Great Price Campaign was launched on April 24 by Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The campaign at Tesco’s 45 stores nationwide saw some 600 essential items on sale at discounts up to 30%.
