CUSTOMERS who have settled their electricity bills at a mini-post office in Taman Megah, Cheras, were shocked to discover that the money was not transferred to Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB).
They received letters from TNB asking them to pay up or risk having their electricity supply disconnected.
“When I checked with TNB, it confirmed that the amount of RM919.41 was not transferred to them,” he said.
Four victims sought the help of Serdang MCA recently to highlight the problem.
Tan Chun Tat said a TNB officer visited his shop in Taman Megah to remind him to pay his March electricity bill which he had already done so in April.
“I checked with TNB later and it confirmed the amount of RM919.41 had not been passed over to them,” he said.
So Kim Tee, 52, who is also the Serdang MCA Public and Services Complaints Bureau deputy chairman, said his February bill of RM737.45 was listed as arrears in his two subsequent bills.
He then received the warning letter from TNB.
“I was told to photocopy the paid bills for Pos Malaysia to investigate. The process will take a month,” he said.
Another victim, Woon Boon Seng, 48, from Kajang Prima faced a similar problem with his March bill of RM404.30.
Chong Yok Bing, 60, from Damai Perdana also received a letter from TNB regarding an unsettled amount of RM306.75 for his March bill.
Serdang MCA Public Services Complaints Bureau chairman Allan Liew said the police had detained an employee of the mini-post office who was believed to be the culprit.
“The TNB office in Bandar Tun Hussein Onn confirmed that it has received more than 20 similar complaints since December. The amount involves more than RM10,000,” he said.
Liew said the TNB would not be responsible for the victims’ loss because it was the mini-post office’s fault.
He advised the public to be careful when settling their bills.
“Make sure the right sum of money is credited into the correct account and take note of any arrears in your following bills,” he said.
Liew urged the mini-post office in question to bear the full responsibility.
Serdang MCA deputy chairman Datuk Hoh Hee Lee hoped Pos Malaysia would monitor the mini-post offices to ensure they had a good auditing practice.
“Pos Mini is supposed to provide convenience to the public but this incident proved that the current system allows room for dishonesty,” he said.
Liew also suggested that customers be allowed to pay by cheque at mini-post offices.
