SOME 1,000 students from SMK Seri Keledang have pledged their participation in Ipoh Starwalk 2012.
The school’s senior assistant (co-curriculum) Siti Aminah Hassan said another 1,000 of its students were expected to hand in their applications, soon.
“We had 350 students who participated last year. But based on their positive feedback and encouragement to other students to take part, I am not surprised if at least 2,000 students sign up,” she said.
Form Six student Leong Ay Yee is looking forward to join the walk for the third time.
“Form Six students don’t have many opportunities to hang out while gaining extra co-curricular points.
“After the walk, we get together to have a good time at the booths and enjoy the performances,” Ay Lee said.
Her classmate Ho Kah Hong agreed, saying the experience of walking in a large group was different from the usual sporting events at school.
While most of his friends will be participating in the non-competition event, state runner S. Tamil is aiming for a top 10 spot in the Boy’s Below-20 category.
“I will be walking with my athletic coach V. Krishnan for company and support. We train every day for 90 minutes in hopes of winning top placing in the category,” said Tamil.
Ipoh Starwalk 2012 is jointly organised by Star Publications (M) Bhd and the Ipoh City Council with the cooperation of the state government, Perak Athletic Association, Perak Education Department, state police, Malaysian Red Crescent Society, Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital and Rela.
The event will be held on June 17 at the Stadium Indera Mulia.
Registration fee is RM20 (international category), RM15 (competition) and RM10 (non-competition).
Each participant will get a T-shirt and goodie bag while those who complete the walk within the stipulated time stand to win attractive prizes.
Entry forms will be printed in MetroPerak every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Participants can also sign up at The Star Ipoh office at No 8-10 in Lorong Chung Thye Phin during office hours and on Saturdays from 9am to 5pm.
Both local and international participants can register online at http://sites.thestar.com.my/starwalk/ by today for the competition category and June 1 for the non-competition category.
