No audit report so no date set for MAU’s AGM

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Athletic Union (MAU) cannot fix the date for their annual general meeting (AGM) until the audit report has been approved.

“The report isn’t ready yet,” MAU president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said after chairing a coaching committee meeting in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

“We can’t decide the AGM date until the report is cleared. We hope it will be ready by the next council meeting. I will announce the AGM date once the council members are satisfied with the report.

“Under the MAU constitution, I must hold the AGM by June but I’m also waiting for the announcement of the date for the general election. If the polls are in June, I will postpone the AGM by one or two months because the general election is more important than our AGM,” said Shahidan.

Shahidan, the former Perlis mentri besar, is seeking a fourth term as MAU president. He has been at the helm since 2006.

The Tunku Mahkota of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has indicated that he will challenge Shahidan for the post.

Shahidan, who is also the coaching committee chairman, said the national athletes only featured in half of the 45 events in the SEA Games in Palembang last year.

“This is because we didn’t have athletes for some events. We will use the National Schools Championships (MSSM) in Kangar from May 22-26 and also the Sukma (Malaysia Games) in Kuantan from July 6-17 to unearth new talent for the back-up squad,” said Shahidan. “The junior athletes will be trained to compete in all, or at least in two-thirds, of the events in the next SEA Games.”
