MUAR: The fear of the peoples’ power has made the opposition-controlled states reluctant to hold the 13th general elections simultaneously with the other states.
Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim said this also showed the opposition parties were scared of losing the four states it now controlled.
He said opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was recently reported to have said that state leaders in Kelantan, Kedah, Penang and Selangor had yet to agree on the matter.
If the opposition leaders refused to hold the next general election simultaneously with the Federal Government, they do not care about the people’s interest.
They only think about maintaining their powers in the four states they control, he told reporters after presenting excellent awards to students who scored top marks in the 2011 SPM exam here recently.
Razali, who is also Umno Youth vice-chairman, said the opposition liked to talk about peoples’ power but in reality they did not care about the people’s needs.
He said the Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof had recently hoped for the 13th general election to be held simultaneously in all states to save cost.
He said the oppositions should not fear of losing in the general election as they were the ones that wanted parliament to be dissolved and return the mandate to the people.
However, he added, the opposition had to discuss among themselves on whether they should hold the next general election together with the other states.
Razali also commented on former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s view for Umno to give rooms for professionals to contest in the next general election.
He said Umno had taken the
factor into consideration but it also wanted to field winnable candidates.
“The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had made it clear that Barisan Nasional will field winnable candidates as it wants to win with bigger votes this time,” he added.
