MALACCA: The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) had roped in a convoy of Volkswagen Beetle to jointly promote their organ donation campaign.
The convoy made a stopover at Pantai Hospital in Ayer Keroh here when the hospital management played host to the entourage, recently.
The Malaysian Society of Nephrology (MSN), Health Ministry and National Transplant Resource Centre (NTRC) also took part in the event.
Together with the Volkswagen Beetle Cars Club, the NKF conducted an eye-catching convoy around Malacca’s city centre to inspire the public to come forward and pledge as organ donors.
The NKF’s Chief Executive Officer Chua Hong Wee said that currently there are over 15,000 patients in the waiting list throughout the country for kidney transplant.
“We decided on bring also the convoy to woo more donors to pledge their organs in aid of those in waiting list for kidney.
“The convoy drivers distributed freebies at all our stopovers and also organ donation pledge forms,” he said, adding that NKF expects to garner more donors through the campaign.
The Beetle convoy was flagged-off at Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Johor Baru and made stopovers in several venues including Seremban and Petaling Jaya.
Pantai Hospital Ayer Keroh senior operations manager Tan Yew Aik said it was an honour for the hospital to be selected a venue for the Beetle convoy stopover in Malacca.
After the Volkswagen convoy left to complete their tour, a health screening campaign was conducted at he hospital.
The NKF is a non-profit organisation with some 1,400 kidney disease patients receiving subsidised dialysis treatment in 24 dialysis centers nationwide organised.
The event was held in conjunction with its seventh year celebration of the World Kidney Day.
