Former internationals out to steal thunder from rising stars

KUALA LUMPUR: Some of the former internationals are out to steal the thunder from the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) future stars at the Selangor Open at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara today.

Second seed Mohd Arif Abdul Latif takes on ex-national shuttler Kuan Beng Hong where the former is highly motivated to impress the coaches and be considered for the Thomas Cup Finals squad.

Some other intriguing second round matches involve youngsters Mohd Syawal Mohd Ismail, Chan Kwong Beng and Misbun Ramdan Misbun Sidek. They will contend with veterans K. Yogendran, Yeoh Kay Bin and Ramesh Nathan respectively.

In the men’s doubles, the spotlight will be on two national pairs, Goh V Shem-Teo Kok Siang and Chooi Kah Ming-Ow Yao Han, who cross swords with Chan Chong Ming-Lee Wan Wah and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif respectively.

World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei also begins his campaign today in the mixed doubles with Vivian Hoo as they square off against Mohd Hashim-Ho Bee Ling.

Chong Wei, a 10-time national champion, is skipping the men’s singles to give the back-up shuttlers a chance to shine.

Yesterday, many of the Division One players received a first-round bye while the competition for Division Two went full swing.
