Baby items on offer

EAGER fathers and expecting mothers were spotted leaving the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) with bags full of baby items.

From the latest aerodynamic baby strollers to fancy princess frocks and Angry Bird merchandise, the Mom & Baby Expo 2012 saw a large crowd thronging the event on the first day.

Inside PISA, colourful balloons and cartoon characters decorated the various booths with activities galore.

Today, games like musical chairs and baby diaper changing, baby crawling and bubbly twins contests will be held.

Father of two Jimmy Chew, 28, said the freebies were an added reason for him to rush over during his lunch break.

“To be honest, my main aim is to stock up on cheap diapers but my wife will be happy with the goodie bags and free samples,” the engineer said.

The three-day event ending tomorrow is organised by a publi-sher of Kuala Lumpur-based mo-ther and baby magazines.

Today Publishing executive di-rector Patrick Kok said this is the first time the company had brought its successful annual exhibition up north.

“For four years, we’ve been organising similar fairs in Kuala Lumpur and Johor but now that we are established in the central and southern regions, we will include Penang in our annual exhibitions from now on.

“The response since the exhi-bition opened here has been very good and we are expecting some 50,000 visitors by it ends,” he said.

He said most of the exhibitors were from Kuala Lumpur.

“Many of them are ‘big boys’ in the industry,” said Kok.

“There are a total of 200 booths carrying 320 renowned brands and I believe this is the largest parenting expo in the northern region — it’s very targeted and completely dedicated to expecting mothers.”

He said 8,000 goodie bags worth RM600,000 would have been distributed by the time the expo ends.

“The hourly lucky draws and non-stop games are included to make the event more exciting and fun for the family.

“With the ‘dragon baby boom’ this year, many exhibitors are repor-ting brisk sales,” he said.

Opening hours are from 11am to 9pm.

Tomorrow, activities such as cartoon costume parties will also be going on all day.

Admission is free.
